“After 3 back operations and numerous attempts to get in shape without further injury, learning Pilates from Derry has changed my life.  Literally!  Initially, I took one on one lessons to ensure I learnt the correct techniques and built up my core strength.  I now attend Derry’s Pilates class, but more importantly, a stronger back has allowed me return to other fitness activities without injuring my back.  Ultimately, I’ve lost 2.5 stone and completely changed my body shape.”

“I was initially sceptical about the health and exercise benefits of Pilates but decided to sign up for a course with Derry. I have now been in his Pilates class for about two years. I thoroughly enjoy the classes as Derry is an excellent instructor; he's engaging and enthusiastic which helps motivate me to improve each week. He has a knack of subtly challenging and encouraging the class to improve so much so that I am now able for some of the more complicated moves that I thought would be far beyond my capabilities when I first began. I highly recommend Derry as an instructor, and would encourage anyone, from the complete beginner to those who have more experience, to try out his Pilates class.”

Pilates

Pilates core strengthening and flexibility training

Pilates is a series of exercises designed to strengthen the deep abdominals and supportive muscles of the low back. Through strong breathing techniques and challenging mat exercises you can improve your posture, increase flexibility, build strength and muscle tone throughout the body.
The beauty of the Pilates technique is that all you need is a little bit of floor space and some free time making it a very practical form of exercise.

Postural dysfunction and lower back pain are prevalent in today’s society. In fact nine out of ten people can be seen to have some degree of either upper or lower cross syndrome, a description given to those with less than perfect posture.  However the solution is simple, we need to strengthen those muscles that are weak and stretch muscles that are tight. This is why Pilates while a relatively new method of exercise has seen such an explosion of popularity in the last few years – It is a formulated series of exercises and stretches to counteract the daily stresses put on our body.
As a bonus Pilates teaches deep abdominal breathing which helps to relax and relieve tension leaving you feeling more positive and energised a sure fire way to improve your posture and general health.

Pilates classes are run regularly in the fantastic Le Cheile community centre in Donnycarney not far from the ISI training centre.
